Track and Train

Night Traveler
It rumbles ahead,
plodding steady and true,
its light shines the way
with a cargo that’s due.
Wheels rhythmically click
as steel impacts steel,
joints groan under tension
as the frame squeaks and squeals.
From Pittsburgh to Wheeling
and St. Marys too,
the trees part ways reverently
as it rattles on through.
With steam in its belly
it unleashes its horn,
and like the towns it divides
it sounds just as forlorn.
Smaller and fainter
it appears in one’s sight,
for the red light’s now blackened
as the train becomes night.
